The release of his magnificent new, Hot Tone label debut CD, 22, features bassist Mimi Jones’ supple, deep basslines and drummer Rudy Royston’s quicksilver rhythms, in a trio he christened The Controlling Ear Unit. “I wanted to create an environment where a sensitive player could make his own musical choices, without fear of the consequences,” Perdomo says. “The word ‘unit’ is appropriate because although the current group is a trio, it doesn’t really have to be restrained to that. It could have a different format, depending on what the music calls for.”

Dinah Vero started her musical studies at the Conservatoire In Paris, France where she studied piano with Christiane Becker and Lucettes Descaves. She later moved to Montreal, Qc-Canada, where she attended the Montreal Music Conservatory. She obtained first prizes in solfege, music theory, harmony, contrepoint and piano. Ms. Vero attended The New School in New York, NY where she studied jazz with Jaky Byard, Junior Mance, Charles Tolliver, Cecil Bridgewater, Reggie Workman.

Roberto Quintero was born in Caracas, Venezuela, surrounded by Afro-Venezuelan and Afro-Cuban rhythms and music. His father, a respected composer, singer and percussionist, tutored and encouraged Roberto on percussion throughout his adolescent years. Roberto comes from a long line of outstanding musicians, including his Uncle Carlos Nene Quintero and cousin Luisito Quintero. Roberto studied at the Conservatory of Music in Caracas, Venezuela and Orquesta Sinfonica Juvenil de Venezuela.

Debriano started playing jazz instruments as a teenager in Franklin K. Lane High School. Mixon was born in Harlem, New York City. He gained some attention in the 1970s and continues to record and play in New York and abroad. He started off as a tap dancer, attending the Ruth Williams Dance Studio. Later, he attended the High School of Performing Arts with Dance as his major but soon switched to playing the piano after being inspired by visits with his grandfather to see jazz artists playing at the Apollo Theater.

A native of Baltimore, drummer George Gray is held in high esteem for his time and versatility. Soon after earning a degree in music education at Morgan State University, he was offered the drum chair in Pockets, a major funk group produced by Verdine and Maurice White from Earth, Wind & Fire. After three albums for Columbia with this group, Gray went on to freelance with a long list of musical greats including Chuck Berry, Gary Bartz, Earth, Wind & Fire, Pharoah Sanders, Abdullah Ibrahim and Onaje Allan Gumbs.

He attended The Hartt School at the University of Hartford majoring in African American Music and History under the tutelage of alto saxophonist Jackie McLean.[1] He is the nephew of drummer and composer Walter Bolden.[2]

Saxophonist Vincent Herring's intense, soulful, multi-noted style and ebullient swing have excited audiences worldwide. On stage, Herring and his band often make an incendiary sound over fine and controlled rhythms of modern times.
Vincent started playing saxophone at the age of 11 in school bands and studying privately at Dean Frederick’s School of Music in Vallejo, CA. At the age of 16, Herring was studying at California State University at Chico on a music scholarship. A year later he had won a berth in the United States Military Academy Band at West Point.

RICK GERMANSON has been a highly in-demand pianist on the New York City Jazz scene for well over a decade. A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Rick relocated to New York City in 1998. Rick won the GRAND PRIZE at The American Pianists' Association Jazz Piano Competition in 1996. He was awarded "Best of New Talent" in 2004 by All About Jazz NYC.

In 1999 she revived a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music and studied Jazz piano, Improvisation and Composition. She was a semi-finalist at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival Solo Piano Competition in Montreux, Switzerland both in 2002 and 2003. She has toured Germany, Italy and Japan and has performed with several jazz greats such as Joe Lovano, Kevin Mahogany, Bobby McFerrin, Tiger Okoshi and Phil Wilson while in college.
